Photograph of the Viralimalai Temple, from the 'Photographic Views of Poodoocottah' (Madras, 1858) collection, taken by Linnaeus Tripe in c. 1858. Viralimalai is situated northwest of Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu. The town is located around the base of the Viralimalai hill, hence the town, temple and hill all have same name. A flight of 207 steps carries you to the top of the small and rocky hill. The Hindu temple atop the hill has several finely carved sculptures and pillars that depict various saints and yogis who have performed penance on this spot. This photograph is a distant view of the hill and temple.
