This photograph of a 'mihrab' or prayer niche with an inscription, is from an unidentified mosque in Bengal, taken by an unidentified photographer in the 1880's. The flat prayer niche is faced in black basalt stone, quarried in nearby Bihar, into which inscriptions in Arabic script and abstract floral motifs have been carved in low relief. The 'mihrab' or niche indicates the direction of Mecca towards where Muslims focus their acts of prostration during prayer.
