Main fa├žade of the Prince of Wales Hospital at Varanasi, from the Kitchener of Khartoum Collection: 'Views of Benares. Presented by the Maharaja of Benares' by Madho Prasad, c. 1905. The building was constructed to celebrate the visit of his Majesty King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, to Varanasi during his Indian tour, 1876-77. The foundation stone was laid by his Majesty and the hospital was opened by Lord Ripon in 1877. When it was built the hospital consisted of eight wards, an operating theatre and had detached accommodation for private residents.
