Photograph of Pundits in the modern-day state of Jammu and Kashmir in India, taken by an unknown photographer in the 1890s. The Brahmins, or Pundits, are members of the priestly caste, the head of the caste system in India. Because of their scholarly background they are often teachers of sacred texts as well as performing readings and acting as priests in the household ceremonies of princes and other Brahmin families.
