The Pakhal river was damed to form the Pakhal lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in the Deccan. Lala Raja Deen Dayal (1844-1905) was educated as an engineer before becoming a professional photographer at the age of thirty. Dayal travelled extensively across the country carting heavy loads of photographic equipment in bullock carts to record views of architecture and landscape.
