Photograph of Pakhal river, Andrea Pradesh, taken by Deen Dayal in the 1880s, from Curzon Collection: 'Views of HH the Nizam's Dominions, Hyderabad, Deccan, 1892'. The Pakhal river was damed to form the Pakhal lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in the Deccan. Lala Raja Deen Dayal (1844-1905) was educated as an engineer before becoming a professional photographer at the age of thirty. Dayal travelled extensively across the country carting heavy loads of photographic equipment in bullock carts to record views of architecture and landscape.
