Panoramic view of Cambay in Gujarat, from the top of the Jami Masjid, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s, from the Archaeological Survey of India. This view is from the south end of the mosque, looking over the rooftops of the town, towards the Gulf of Khambhat in the distance. Khambhat, or Cambay, is an ancient port that once served the city of Ahmadabad, 84 km (52 miles) to the north. An English factory was established here in 1613 but Cambay declined in importance after the rise of the nearby port of Surat. Later the harbour silted up and the port was completely abandoned.
