Palm-lined road with a gopuram seen through the trees in the distance, Tanjore, taken by Samuel Bourne in 1869. Tanjore dominated the political history of the region for nearly thousand years as the capital of the Cholas (9th-13th centuries), the Nayakas (1535-1676) and the Marathas (1676-1855). The Cholas built more than 74 temples in the area but the Brihadishvara temple constructed by Rajaraja I (r.985-1012) is said to be the greatest architectural achievement of the Chola era.
