Photograph of a river view near Tanjore, taken by Samuel Bourne in 1869. Tanjore, on the Kaveri river, was an important town and dominated the political history of the region for nearly thousand years as the capital of the Cholas (9th-13th centuries), the Nayakas (1535-1676) and the Marathas (1676-1855). Tanjore lies in the fertile Kaveri delta. The river Kaveri, is celebrated as Daksina Ganga, the sacred river of southern India. It originates from the Western Ghats in Coorg. The river flows through the Karnataka and Tamilnadu before entering the Bay of Bengal.
