This print was taken by Samuel Bourne in the 1860s. Situated on a high plateau overlooking the valley of Kashmir, this temple is dedicated to the sun deity Surya and was built by Lalitaditya (c.724-60), the powerful and renowned monarch of the Karkota dynasty. It is typical of the early Kashmir temple style, displaying a mixture of classical architecture, Hindu themes and elements charachteristic of the western Himalayas. It is masonry built with trilobed arches and the remains of carved engaged pilasters.
