This photograph of the enclosure walls was taken by Joseph David Beglar in the 1870s and forms part of the Archaeological Survey of India Collections (Indian Museum Series). The site is described as follows, "The name of Garhwa or 'the Fort' is a complete misnomer, as the place is only a square enclosure around a group of temples, without an strength as a military position..." A. Cunningham, Report for the year 1871-72 (A.S.I. vol. III, Calcutta, 1873), pp. 53-61. The parapets with their fortress like loop holes were a later addition and without these, the structure loses much of its military appearance. The walls are also not tall enough for defensive purposes.
