Photograph of Rocky outcrop with Karna Chowpar cave in the Barabar Hills. This photograph was taken by Thomas Fraser Peppé in 1870 and is part of the collection of Sir Richard Carnac Temple. The caves in the Barabar and Nagarjuni hills date back to the 3rd century BC in the Maurya period and are thought to be some of the earliest examples of rock-cut architecture in India. They were used as a retreat by Jain monks.
