Photograph from the Macnabb Collection (Col James Henry Erskine Reid): Album of Indian Views, taken in 1900. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway connects Mettupalayam, at the foot of the hills, to Udagamandalam (Ooty). The first section to Coonoor was completed in 1899 by the Nilgiri Railway Company and was extended to Udagamandalam in 1903. The railway is the steepest in Asia, the incline being overcome by the use of the Alternate Biting System commonly known as 'rack and pinion' rail system.
