River-view near Kunari, [Kota]

Photograph from the Curzon Collection: 'Visit of His Excellency the Viceroy. Kotah, November, 1902' of the riverbank near Kunari, at Kota, Rajasthan, taken by P.A. Herzog and P. Higgins in 1902. The city of Kota lies on the east bank of the river Chambal in southern Rajasthan. This view of the Chambal shows a ghat built at the base of a rocky cliff, with steps leading down to the water. Ghats were used for bathing, washing clothes, collecting water, and ceremonial purposes. In the shadow of the cliff overhang at left is a shrine in the form of a relief-carved scuptural frieze set into the rock, and at right on a raised rectangular plinth is another shrine to Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu deity.
