Photograph of snowy peaks near Gangotri from Bhaironghati, taken by Samuel Bourne in the 1860s. Bhaironghati is situated at the confluence of the Bhagirathi with the Jadhganga rivers. Both rivers flow through deep gorges confined by perpendicular walls of granite and wild landscape. Gangotri Glacier is the source of the Bhagirathi River which is an important tributary of the Ganges River. A note in the Bourne & Shepherd catalogue states that this view was a, 'Prize photograph, 1867'.
