Photograph of a street scene in Lucknow from the 'Lee-Warner Collection: 'Bombay Presidency. William Lee Warner C.S.' taken by John Edward Saché in the 1870s. Lucknow is the state capital of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. Although Lucknow had been part of the Mughal Empire from the 16th century, by the late 18th century the Muslim Nawabs of Avadh had made the city their capital. The architecture in this view is strongly influenced by Mughal design. On either side of the street, we find two-storey arcades with cusped arches.
