Photograph of a statue of Aditya at Dulmi, taken by Joseph David Beglar in 1872-73. Dulmi is situated in the modern state of West Bengal. The town is home to a number of ancient remains including a Shiva temple, a fort and a large number of mounds containing masonry and brick remains. These are what remain of both ancient houses and of a large number of temples that once stood in the area. The temples were built by a number of different faiths including Vaishnavaites, Shivaites, Buddhists and Jains. Large quantities of sculpture have been recovered from the mounds. The piece in this photograph was described by Beglar in his 'Report of a tour through the Bengal Provinces...in 1872-73' (A.S.I. vol. VIII, Calcutta, 1878) p. 187, "One statue alone of Aditya, on the banks of a small tank, where lie also some fragments of Ganeca, &c., is inscribed, in characters of probably the tenth century."
