Photograph of the shikara of the Dodda Basappa Temple at Dambal taken by Henry Cousens in the1880s. Dambal is located in the modern state of Karnataka, twenty one kilometres south-east of Gadag. The Dodda Basappa (Great Nandi) Temple was built in the 12th Century in a Late Chalukya style. It is built on a stellate plan with many angle projections similar to the Hoysala temples of South India. The outer walls are decorated with carved pilasters and miniature temples in relief. The sanctuary is covered by a multi-storey tower or shikara which has the same projections of the walls of the sanctuary.
