Photograph of the step-well at Gadarwara, taken by Henry Cousens around 1893. Stepwells are underground monuments which generally consist of a vertical well with a system of hauling up water by buckets and a stepped corridor of many storeys that reaches the water level of the well. This form of architecture survives in examples from the 7th century all over Rajasthan and Gujarat mainly. This view shows the arcaded upper storey of the step-well with the well chamber behind.
