A photograph, from the 'Album of Indian Views', of Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir taken by John Edward Saché during the 1860s. The city typified by lakes and waterways, gardens and traditional wooden architecture is situated on the Dal Lake and the River Jhelum, which divides the town in two. In the 19th century Srinagar provided an ideal setting for photographers interested in capturing picturesque views for a curious European audience. This view is along a canal lined with houses cantilevered out over the water. Some of the old timber houses with their sloping earth roofs survive even today.
