Photograph from an album of 43 views of Burma (Myanmar) from the Sladen Collection, taken by J. Jackson in c.1868. View looking along Pagoda Road, the southern approach to the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Rangoon (Yangon). Pagoda Road runs down through the centre of Rangoon to meet the Rangoon River, and is traditionally the main approach for visitors to Burma’s most revered Buddhist shrine. The bell shape of its stupa is visible from great distances from its elevated position on Singuttara Hill. Another smaller stupa overgrown with vegetation appears in the left foreground.
