Starboard beam view of the ‘Rani’, a standard stern wheel ferry steamer moored in mid-stream on the Ganges River, taken by an unknown photographer c. 1897 from the Elgin Collection: 'Presented to His Excellency the Earl of Elgin & a Memento of His Excellency's Visit to the East Indian Railway Workshops at Jamalpur November 30th 1897'. The invention of the steam boat in the late 18th/early 19th century revolutionised river travel; they provided the power to travel speedily up and down river and were a cheap and convenient method of carrying passengers and merchandise. The East Indian Railway also maintained ferry steamer service.
