Photograph of Bhil Shikaris in the modern state of Jammu and Kashmir in India, taken by an unknown photographer in the 1890s. Shikari, the modern Hindi word for hunter, is Persian in derivation. The Bhil Shikari are a nomadic tribe living in northern India. They are famous hunters and trackers and, in the nineteenth century, often worked as guides and beaters on big game hunts for lions and wild boar.
