Photograph from an album of 41 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon showing a gateway at Srirangam. Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description, ' [It] shows the east face of the same Gopura as was illustrated in the last photograph. Though possessing the same number of storeys as the great gateway...it is neither so tall, nor so graceful in outline, but its sculptures are good and sharp, and not overdone or extravagant. In front of it, is one of the 16 pillared porches, which are found everywhere throughout these temple courts, and form such pleasing resting-places for the pilgrims who frequent them'.
