Sonamerg, Sind Valley
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the Sind Valley in Jammu and Kashmir taken in the 1860s, from the Edward Molyneux Collection: 'Album of Indian Photographs'. This is a view looking up the Sind River towards Sonamarg and its glacier. Sonamarg ('Meadow of Gold') is located near Srinagar in the north of Kashmir, near Ladakh. The Sind is a tributary of the River Jhelum, and runs through the Sind Valley. The source of the Sind is traditionally considered to be the sacred Lake Gangbal on Harmukh Mountain. The river flows for sixty miles and joins the Jhelum at Lake Anchar at Ganderbal entering through a swampy delta.
