Photograph of the old mosque beside Mir Abdul Bake Purani's Tomb at Sukkur in the Shikarpur District of Sind in Pakistan, taken by Henry Cousens in 1896-7. This is a close view, head-on, of the central bay and showing details of the tile work decoration, with graves in the foreground. Cousens wrote in The Antiquities of Sind, "Close by it [the tomb] on the west, the intervening space being crowded with graves, are the walls of two riuned buildings, probably both mosques, upon which still remain large areas of coloured tile work in designs and combinations of tints very different in their treatment to what is found in other parts of Sind...What makes this difference is the free use of plain unglazed brick or terra-cotta surfaces, alternating with the coloured tile work, and this produces a soft subdued tone to the whole which is distinctly pleasing."
