Sculptures on eastern torana or gateway, Sanchi Tope
Photographer: Griggs, William
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of four separate sculpture panels from the cross-member of the eastern torana or gateway of the stupa of Sanchi, taken by William Griggs in 1861. The first panel from the top depicts the Great Departure of Shakyamuni, the Buddha-to-be, when he left his home in Kapilavastu in search of spiritual truth. In the relief the Buddha is represented aniconically by parasols and footprints. The middle panel depicts the royal visit of Ashoka to the bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightment. The last two panels represent an animal procession towards the bodhi tree and an elephant procession proceeding towards a stupa.
