Photograph of the distinctive huts of a Toda mund (village) at Ootacamund in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu, taken by Samuel Bourne in 1869. Todas are a pastoral tribe of the Nilgiri Hills, whose livelihood depended on cattle. They live in settlements of three to seven thatched houses scattered over the pasture slopes. Most of the huts were used for living accommodation, one as a dairy and one to house cattle at night. Built on a wooden framework, a typical house has an arched roof in the shape of a half-barrel.
