Photograph of the Jamrud Fort in the North-West Frontier Province, taken by Charles Shepherd in the 1860s. Jamrud fort occupies a ruggedly majestic setting at the mouth of the Khyber Pass. It was constructed on the site of an earlier fort out of stone daubed with mud plaster under the direction of the famous Sikh General Hari Singh in 1823. He is buried here after having fallen in action against the forces of the Amir of Kabul in 1837.
