View of a wooden bridge across the River Jhelum with the Raja's Palace in the background, taken by Samuel Bourne in the 1860s. Srinagar is the capital of Kashmir and is situated on the river Jhelum, which divides the town into two. The river is crossed by nine famous old wooden bridges or kadals, built on an ancient cantilever principle, and newer constructions as well.
