Photograph by E Taurines of the Victoria Dock construction work in Bombay City taken in 1885. The view shows a trench of the north wall cut through the rock. The excavation and masonry work were undertaken by Messrs Kirby and Co. The excavation was completed early in January 1888 and by the end of the month the whole of the dock bottom had been trimmed over and was ready for letting in the water. The total quantity of excavation removed from the inside of the dock and for all foundations amounted to 1,452,311 cubic yards. All the dock and harbour walls and the 80 ft entrance were finished in December 1888.
