Part of a portfolio of photographs taken in 1858 by Major Robert Christopher Tytler and his wife, Harriet, at Delhi, Lucknow and Cawnpore in the aftermath of the Uprising of 1857. This is a view of the site in Kanpur which was to become the Memorial Garden and over which Marochetti's angel and Yule's memorial screen were erected. The garden was intended to commemorate the tragic events of the Uprising of 1857, in particular the fact that many women and children died at the site of the Bibighar well as they were trying to draw water. After Indian independence the memorial was moved to the All Souls memorial Church.
