Photograph of the perforated stone window in Tipu Sultan's Tomb in Shriringapattana. Tipu Sultan built the Gumbaz mausoleum (1784) for himself and his father Haider Ali, who were defeated by the British at the end of the Mysore Wars in the battle of 1799. Tipu was interred with full military honours by the British. The mausoleum is a severe building crowned by a dome with minarets at the corners and is surrounded by a corridor with polished pillars. A long alley of cypresses leads to the tombs.
