Photograph of the Great Arch & Iron Column near the Kootub Minar, Delhi. from the 'Strachey Collection of Indian Views', taken by Shepherd and Robertson in the 1860s.The Qutab Minar Complex was initiated by Qutb-ud-din in the twelve century to celebrate the onset of the Islamic presence in India; the buildings were constructed over three different periods of rule with the exception of the fourth century Iron Pillar. The Mosque is one of the earliest extant in India and is a fine example of Islamic architecture employing the Islamic principles of accurate construction and geometric ornamentation.
