Distant view of the Memorial Well photographed by John Edward Saché in the 1870s. The Memorial Garden was established to commemorate the tragic events of India's First War of Independence, 1857, in particular that many women and children died at the site of the Bibighar well as they were trying to draw water. Marochetti's Angel, a memorial to those who lost their lives in the conflict in 1857, and surrounded by Henry Yule's Gothic screen, was originally situated in the Municipal Gardens covering the Bibighar Well, but was relocated to the Memorial Church after Independence was granted in 1947.
