This photograph, taken by Samuel Bourne in the 1860s, shows a view of the 'Takht-i-Suleiman' or Throne of Solomon at Srinagar. The site is said to date back to 2,500 BC, however the present temple probably dates from the time of the Mughal emperor Jahangir (reigned 1605-1627). Takht-i-Suleiman is also known as Shankaracharya Hill. It rises to a height of 1000 feet, and overlooks the city below.
