The Ghaut, Wheeler's Massacre, Cawnpore, NWP.
Photographer: Bourne, Samuel
Medium: Photographic print
This photograph was taken by Samuel Bourne in the 1860s. It shows a view of Sati Chaura Ghat on the banks of the river Ganges, the scene of a tragic massacre during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The site came to be known as ‘Massacre Ghat’. A small hexagonal temple of Shiva survives on the site today. At the top of the track leading to the ghat is a small black plaque inlaid into the wall in 1930 to mark the site.
