This photograph of the Great Imambara from 'The Lucknow Album: containing a series of fifty photographic views of Lucknow,' was taken by Darogha Abbas Ali c.1874. Architect Kifayat-ullah designed this imambara in 1784 for ruler Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula of Awadh (r.1778-97). It is a most impressive building with a large vaulted hall spanning 50 metres long and 15 metres high. Imambaras are buildings used either for the Muslim fesitval of Muharram or as a mausoleum.
