A photograph, from the ‘Album of Indian Views’, of the Sati Chaura Ghat in Kanpur taken by John Edward Saché in the 1860s. Sati Chaura Ghat was the scene of a bloody massacre during the Uprising of 1857. The insurgents offered the British non-combatants remaining in Kanpur a deal of safe passage to Allahabad. On 27th June 1857, the British were loaded on the boats but the Indian boatmen, instead of pushing off, jumped overboard and made for the shore. The sepoys fired on the boats leading to the death of most of the men, the surviving women and children were taken prisoner.
