Photograph taken by J. Jackson in c.1868, part of an album of 43 views of Burma (Myanmar) from the Sladen Collection. View of a temple on the platform of the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Rangoon (Yangon), Burma's most venerated and spectacular Buddhist shrine. The temple is open and colonnaded with carved wooden spandrels between the columns and an ornately carved, gilded, tiered, wooden roof, characteristic features of royal and religious Burmese architecture. It is one of numerous shrines, monuments and pavilions built on the platform surrounding the pagoda.
