Photograph of the Commissioner's House, Gaya, from the Elgin Collection: 'Spring Tours 1894-98', taken in the 1890s. Victor Alexander Bruce (1849-1917), ninth Earl of Elgin and 13th Earl of Kincardine, served as Viceroy of India between 1894 and 1899. This first album presents a synopsis of the series of Elgin Albums, from Lord Elgin's arrival in Calcutta in 1894 to the arrival of his successor Lord Curzon and his own departure in 1899. Most of the photographs (in this and succeeding albums) relate to viceregal tours and the main events here documented are the visit to Gaya in Spring 1895 and to Buxar in January 1896.

A view of the substantial commissioner's bungalow with hipped roof and pantiles, a porte-cochère, or carriage entrance is in front of the main entrance and the building has a colonnaded verandah. The Commissioner was in charge of the civil and revenue administration of the district.
