View showing crowds watching the Viceregal party (in the carriage) and escort travelling down a street in Gaya, Bihar, from the Elgin Collection: 'Spring Tours 1894-98', taken in April 1895. Victor Alexander Bruce, the 9th earl of Elgin, 1849–1917, was Viceroy of India (1894–99) and served as colonial secretary from 1905 to 1908. He arrived in Calcutta on 30 March 1895 and during this tour visited the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya. This first album presents a synopsis of the series of Elgin Albums, from Lord Elgin's arrival in Calcutta in 1894 to the arrival of his successor Lord Curzon and his own departure in 1899. Most of the photographs (in this and succeeding albums) relate to viceregal tours and the main events here documented are the visit to Gaya in Spring 1895 and to Buxar in January 1896.
