Photograph from the Elgin Collection: 'Autumn Tour 1896, vol II' of the Durbar Hall of the Jai Vilas Palace at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, taken by an unknown photographer in c.1895. The palace was commissioned by Maharaja Jayaji Rao Scindia (r.1843-86) and completed in 1874. It was designed by Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Michael Filose in a mixed style, based on an Italian palazzo. The Durbar Hall has two of the largests chandeliers in the world, suspended from the arched roof. The room contains richly decorated furniture and crystal ornaments.
