Photograph of the entrance to the temple at Barwa Sagar in the Jhansi district of Madhya Pradesh, taken by Deen Dayal in the 1880s and part of the Bellew Collection of Architectural Views. Dedicated to the mother goddess, the 9th century temple is rectangular in plan and is decorated with fine carvings. Barwa Sagar is in the Bundelkhand region of central India, which was controlled by the Bundella Rajputs. It took its name from a vast tank or reservoir formed from the Betwa river.
