Print from an album of 41 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon. From Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, we obtain the following description of the Vishnu temple of Tirukkoshtiyur (Tirukkotiyur) in Tamil Nadu, 'This Photograph shows the Side Entrance to the same temple. It is more than usually interesting, as it is one of the few examples in the South of India where the temple itself is the principal object. Here and at Tanjore the pyramid erected over the sanctuary rises boldly from the centre of the enclosure, and the gateways are kept subordinate to it. In almost all the other examples above described the gateways overpower the temple, which is generally small'.
