The Rock, Trichinopoly.
Photographer: Nicholas and Company
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the Rock at Tiruchchirapalli, probably taken ca.1880 by Nicholas and Company and forming part of the Ramsden Collection of photographs. The caption also dates the print as 'Jany.1883?' but this possibly refers either to the date of a visit to Tiruchchirappalli or the date of purchase of this print. Tiruchchirappalli in Tamil Nadu was an important city since the 7th century AD, occupied successively by the Pandyas and the Cholas, by Vijayanagara governors, and then by the Nawab of Arcot. The town is situated on the Kavery River and is dominated by a steep granite rock which is more than 83 metres high and is ascended by a covered stone staircase; from the fort there are remarkable views over the surrounding countryside.
