Photograph of the Shore Temple at Mamallapuram, taken by an unknown photographer in the 1880s. The temple was built by Rajasimha, consists of two shrines and is the first Pallava example of a structural temple made of finely dressed blocks of granite. The larger one is orientated east, towards the ocean and the smaller one faces inland. The larger sanctuary houses a linga and shelters an image of Vishnu sleeping on the serpent Ananta. An open passageway leads to another small sanctuary with Shiva icons that faces west. The two pyramidal towers on the Shiva shrines have stepped roof-storeys decorated with miniature buildings culminating in octagonal domes.
