Photograph of the Great Imambara in Lucknow from the 'Earl of Jersey Collection' taken by Deen Dayal in the 1880s. Architect Kifayat-ullah designed this imambara in 1784 for ruler Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula of Awadh (r.1778-97). It is a most impressive building with a large vaulted hall spanning 50 metres long and 15 metres high. Imambaras are buildings used either for the Muslim fesitval of Muharram or as a mausoleum. Subsequently, the imambara was used as a mausoleum for Asaf ud-Daula upon his death in 1797. The Great Imambara complex consists of several forecourts and gateways which lead to the imambara.
