This photograph of the tomb of Colonel W Baillie at Ganjam was taken by an unknown photographer in the 1890s and is one of 118 prints in an album entitled 'Souvenir of Mysore', part of the Curzon Collection. In 1780, Colonel Baillie led his men to join the main British forces on the Carnatic plains in the campaign to impose colonial rule in this fiercely nationalist region. He was intercepted by Haidar Ali and taken prisoner together with 150 of his men. He died two years later. This tomb was erected in 1816, near to the entrance of Tipu's mausoleum.
