Photograph from the Curzon Collection: 'Views in Meywar'', of a view of the chowgan sports, taken by Deen Dayal in c.1890. Udaipur was founded by Maharana Udai Singh (ruled 1567-72) as the fourth and last capital of the Mewar state after the sacking of Chitorgarh, the previous capital. It is a romantic, picturesque city situated in Rajasthan, Western India, surrounded by lakes and gently rolling hills. This is a distant view of a sports day in the city's chowgan or maidan with the town in the background.
