Temple and well, Ujjain

Photograph of a temple and well at Ujjain, taken by George Edward Herne in 1869. Ujjain is one of the seven sacred Hindu cities. It is an ancient pilgrimage centre built on the banks of the Sipra river with its characteristic stepped ghats. The temple is the view seems to be the Mahakala Temple, a sacred Hindu complex later reconstructed in the 20th century. The curvilinear spire has engaged clusters of miniature spires that ornament its exterior surface.
